WHATS MY STORY? WHAT MAKES ME TICK?
As a youth growing up in Taranaki, I was only minimally interested in sport, playing netball and competing in a few low level athletics and cross country events. My passion for sport and fitness grew from joining a work team in 2004 for the Taranaki Around the Mountain Relay Race. I worked hard to build up to being able to run a mere 5km and then never stopped.
In an endeavour to learn more about sport and fitness and how hard I could push myself, I completed a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise through Massey University and then a subsequent Secondary School teaching Diploma. I have been a personal trainer, a sports and event manager, a tertiary teacher in sport science and anatomy and physiology and am now doing a mixture of secondary PE and Health teaching and event management.
Running was my main sport for many years. I competed in several short races, half marathons and two marathons before switching my focus to triathlon in 2011 after being introduced to it by friends.
I began competing seriously in triathlon in 2011 both as an individual and in teams and thrive on the challenge and atmosphere of race day. I amaze myself constantly at how I manage to push through the tough moments and stay mentally focused right to the end of each and every race. I am determined and focused with the tenacity to see through every goal I set for myself. I began dominating in my age group for running in around 2011, particularly 10km and half marathon distance and am now a serious competitor over the standard distance triathlon event. I have competed in two ITU age-group World Championships – Edmonton, Canada in 2014 and Chicago, USA in 2015.
I am still training and competing but more for love, fitness, fun and adventure and to see how else I can challenge myself both physically and mentally. My next goal is to complete the Kathmandu Coast to Coast with my partner in crime, Moss Burmester.
MY VALUES:
Health and Fitness - Functional fitness for life; triathlon - swim, bike, run; watersport; wholefoods that are delicious and nutritious; educating others
Involvement, Inspiration and Fun - trying new things and new sports; inspiring others to give it a go; new events; travel and sport
Giving Back and Helping Others - doing good where and when you can; pay it forward
